about

These archives are a series of digital self-releases which will unearth unreleased, obscure and alternative Ekca Liena material.

Archive #5 contains material related to Slow Music for Rapid Eye Movement, the first Ekca Liena album to be released, which was subsequently reissued twice - once on 2xCD expanded with remixes, then again on 12" through Public House Recordings.

Three, November and Cities in Light all stem from a long synth improvisation recorded I think sometime in 2007 or 8, using a synth settings patch that appears in variations all over the Ekca Liena discography, but especially Slow Music. There exist strong memories of wandering around Brighton listening to this recording in the evening during a chilly November, two months after I had moved there. This simpler alternate version of Missing Weeks uses the same drone to underpin the main phrases. November went on to become November in Flight, released as a bonus disc with special copies of the Slow Music 2xCD reissue, now a PWYW download. Cities in Light is a lighter version of Cities in Flight, which appeared on Dead Pilot Records' Drone Poets compilation, and is included on Archive #2. I have almost no recollection at all of making Skate and can only tell from some recordings buried in the mix, a few techniques and the date that it was made around this time. Realms is one of the earliest Ekca Liena tracks after the original demo album, made using very similar instrumentation to Slow Music material and appearing in its initial track list before the released version was put together. The version of We Are Dying Flames here is just the original improvisation, recorded off the cuff one weekday evening in my bedroom in 2007 or 8.
